What Are Geranium Seeds?

Growing geraniums from seed has improved dramatically over the past several decades. Modern hybrid seed varieties are bred for outstanding vigor, earlier flowering, uniform growth, and beautiful colors.
Unlike older seed varieties, today's hybrids produce professional-quality plants that perform exceptionally well in gardens, containers, and commercial production.
One of our favorite varieties is Maverick Rose Geranium, which produces large, vibrant blooms on compact, vigorous plants.

What Are Geranium Cuttings?

Geranium cuttings are pieces of living stem taken from healthy stock plants. Once rooted, they become genetically identical to the original plant.
This is called vegetative propagation, and it allows growers to reproduce exact flower colors, growth habits, and plant characteristics.
Many of the newest premium geranium varieties are only available as vegetative cuttings because they are protected by plant patents and royalties.
Our Experience at Garden Starts Nursery
At Garden Starts Nursery, we grow both seed-grown geraniums and vegetative geranium cuttings, giving us real-world experience with each production method.
Every season we root well over 8,000 geranium cuttings in our greenhouse. Many of these unrooted cuttings come from Dรผmmen Orange, one of the world's leading breeders of premium vegetative geraniums. These genetics allow us to offer many exciting varieties that aren't available from seed because they are protected by plant patents and royalty agreements.
One advantage of receiving unrooted cuttings is shipping. They are much lighter and take up far less space than finished plugs, making freight costs significantly lower for commercial growers. Another major advantage of rooting your own geranium cuttings is cost savings. Purchasing unrooted cuttings is typically much less expensive than buying finished rooted plugs because you're paying for less labor, less greenhouse time, and lower shipping costs. Since unrooted cuttings are lighter and take up much less space, freight costs are also significantly reduced.
However, rooting your own cuttings successfully requires the right greenhouse environment. Proper mist systems, humidity control, air circulation, sanitation, and temperature management are all critical. Without the proper setup, losses can occur quickly.
At the same time, we also grow thousands of geraniums from seed every year. Modern seed varieties are incredibly uniform, dependable, and economical, making them an excellent choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers.
Our experience with both methods has shown us that there isn't a single "best" option. Instead, the right choice depends on your growing goals, available facilities, and the types of geraniums you want to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are geranium seeds better than geranium cuttings?
Neither is universally better. Seeds are usually easier and more affordable for home gardeners, while cuttings are often preferred by commercial growers wanting patented vegetative varieties.
Why do commercial greenhouses grow geranium cuttings?
Cuttings allow growers to produce exact clones of premium varieties that may not be available from seed. They also provide access to many patented and royalty-protected genetics.
How many geranium cuttings does Garden Starts Nursery root each year?
At Garden Starts Nursery, we root well over 8,000 geranium cuttings every season while also producing thousands of seed-grown geraniums, giving us hands-on experience with both growing methods.
Do cuttings bloom faster than seed-grown geraniums?
Generally, yes. Since cuttings start as living plant tissue, they often reach flowering size sooner than seedlings.
Which is cheaper to grow?
Seeds are typically the least expensive option, especially for home gardeners and growers producing large numbers of plants.
Can beginners grow geraniums from seed?
Absolutely. Modern hybrid geranium seeds germinate well with proper warmth, moisture, and light, making them an excellent choice for beginners.
Are unrooted cuttings cheaper to ship than plugs?
Yes. Unrooted cuttings are lighter and take up much less space than rooted plugs, helping commercial growers reduce shipping costs.
Can I grow beautiful geraniums from either method?
Yes. With proper care, both seed-grown geraniums and rooted cuttings produce vigorous plants with outstanding flowers throughout the growing season.
